Abstract     The existing recommendations for perioperative prophylaxis are still very loose. Different clinical researches have defined the indications, the antimicrobial agents of choice and the period in which they must be applied only for some specified orthopedic surgeries. Surgical treatment of orthopedic patients includes different operations on the motoric system, sometimes also on the sites near the central nervous system. This is the main reason why the procedures sometimes interfere with operations in neurosurgery. The protocols of antimicrobial prophylaxis are defined only for arthroplasty, while for other orthopedic operations they are still the matter of discussion. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the recommendations for antimicrobial prophylaxis in orthopedic surgery and its use in clinical practice.
