Abstract     Background: Device-related infections need to be treated foolowing an accurately chosen surgical treatment plan. In most cases, the two-stage exchange plan is the treatment of choice. It has the efficacy of > 92% and the final functional status is good if compared to other surgical plans. Methods: Over a 10-year period, we retrospectively evaluated the outcome of surgical treatment for infected total hip arthroplasty (THA]. We established four different types af surgical plan: the removal of the prosthesis without reimplantation (Girdlestone], the revision operation without the removal of the prosthesis, one stage exchange and two-stage exchange plan: the fist operation included the remaval of the prosthesis and the reimplantation of the prosthesis after a certain period. Included were patients with infected THA, treated for the first time in the operating room for septic operatians from 11.1993 till 11.2003. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
