Abstract | Intrauterine device represents safe and effective contraceptive method. There are two intrauterine devices (copper and hormonal intrauterine device) that change endometrial characteristics and cervical mucus. Inflammation may occur in the first 20 days after the intrauterine device insertion. In long-term intrauterine device users, the presence of Actynomices spp. might be related to pelvic inflammatory disease, however, its role is unclear. The pelvic inflammatory disease is treated with appropriate antibiotics. If the condition does not improve within 72 hours, it is urgent to remove the intrauterine device and continue the treatment with antibiotics. The final stage of inflammation, tuboovarian abscess could be expected, so ultrasound scan should be done. Tuboovarian abscess can be treated with medication or surgery. | |
