Abstract     Kidney cysts are very common, occurring in 50% of adults. The prevalence increases with age. About 2/3 of people over 80 years old will probably have a kidney cyst. The cause of these cysts is unknown. Simple kidney cysts are abnormal pouches containing fluid and are not joined to kidney cavity. Most often, simple cysts do not cause symptoms or harm the kidney. Cysts can cause pain due to: ◆ growth and stretching of the wall of the cyst, ◆ pressure on the kidney, ◆ pressure on the drainage of the kidney, causing blockage, ◆ pressure on the other organs (stomach, intestines). Simple cyst can also cause high blood pressure. Kidney cysts are found by diagnostic imaging modalities (ultrasonography and CT scan) of the kidneys. When simple cysts are found and there are no complications, no treatment is needed. If cysts cause symptoms, surgery may be needed. The intervention is done under department of interventional radiology by a doctor radiologist, a nurse and an radiographer.
