Abstract     In the majority of healthy individuals, Ieft cerebral hemisphere is language dominant. Previous studies have shown that there is a greater likelihood of finding atypical patterns of hemispheric language dominance (right dominant or bilateral) amongst left-handed compared to right-handed individuals. By using non-invasive functional magnetic resonance imaging, we attempted to confirm these findings in an equal number of right- and left-handed subjects. Though no statistically significant differences in mean calculated lateralization indices between the two groups were found, there was a higher incidence of atypical language dominance among lefthanders. The results of our study are therefore consistent with the assumption that there is a correlation between handedness and language dominance, most likely due to a common genetic factor influencing both of these brain functions.
