Abstract		Whether travel is for business or pleasure, it must be planned and studied carefully in advance, considering all possible risk factors. The adoption of proper guidelines for travellers is of great importance. They enable travellers to get rational and practical advice from their family or general practitioners. Advice about using a traveller's medical kit is also of special importance. In world medicine, family practitioners increasingly concern themselves with travel medicine, as they are very familiar with their patients who travel. Therefore, they must be aware of the basic principles of travel medicine and information about travel medicine must be accessible to them. They should also cooperate with their colleagues on issues related to travel medicine.
Summary		Ne glede na to ali je namen potovanja turista ali popotnika zaseben ali posloven, se ga mora osebni zdravnik lotiti načrtno, upoštevajoč vse dejavnike tveganja na potovanju. Posebno vlogo ima svetovanje popotnikom pred potovanjem, ki omogoča, da le-ti dobijo od svojega osebnega oz. družinskega zdravnika razumne in praktične nasvete. Med nasvete spada tudi nasvet glede sestave potovalne lekarne. Potovalna medicina prehaja v svetu vse bolj v roke zdravnikov družinske oz. splošne medicine, saj ti najbolje poznajo svojega bolnika-popotnika. Zato morajo poznati osnovna načela potovalne medicine, imeti dostop do informacij s tega področja in korektno sodelovati s kolegi drugih specialnosti.
