Abstract | Conventional light microscopy is the established method for laboratory confirmation of malaria. A careful examination of well-prepared and stained, thick and thin blood film still remains the gold standard for the identification of malaria parasites. Travellers can use several commercial rapid diagnostic tests based on the detection of antigens derived from malaria parasites using specific monoclonal antibodies. The sensitivity of rapid diagnostic tests is still a problem, particularly for non-immune populations. The manufacturing of rapid diagnostic tests is currently being reviewed by a number of large companies, and in the near future a new generation of rapid diagnostic tests is expected to bring malaria diagnostics from the microscope to the patient. | |
Summary | Uveljavljena metoda za laboratorijsko potrditev malarije je običajna svetlobna mikroskopija. Skrben pregled pravilno pripravljenega in pobarvanega krvnega razmaza ter debele kaplje ostaja še naprej zlati standard za prepoznavo malarijskih parazitov. Popotniki lahko uporabijo različne trgovsko pripravljene hitre teste, ki temeljijo na dokazovanju antigenov malarijskih parazitov s pomočjo specifičnih monoklonskih protiteles. Občutljivost hitrih testov pa ostaja problem predvsem za neimuno populacijo. Izdelava hitrih diagnostičnih testov za dokaz malarije je trenutno v rokah velikih družb in v bližnji prihodnosti lahko pričakujemo novo generacijo hitrih testov, ki bodo laboratorijsko diagnostiko malarije prestavili od mikroskopa k preiskovancu. | |
