Abstract     Physical and chemical properties if the skin undergoes severe dramatic age-related changes in. including changes in tissue hydration, elasticity and resiliency. Proteoglycans are macromolecular conjugates, composed of a core proetin and covalently attached carbohydrate, which are involved in these tissue properties. Two main proteoglycans mhich are found in the extracellular matrix, are high-molecular weight versican and lom molecular meight decorin. Beside hydrodinamical properties, proteoglycans act as ligands and mediators of many cytokines and human growth factors. As a function of age, there is a decrease in the proportion of versican and a slight increase in the propordon of decorin. During maturation and development, decorin shows a higher degree of polydispersy in both its size and its charge to mass ratio. Additionally, in mature skin, a nem, truncated form of decorin is appearing and may be a catabolic fragment of decorin. Acording to the data above. one may speculate that the change in the quandtadve and qualitative properdes of proteoglycans during ageing, may lead to the maturation and change in the physical properties of skin. The article deals with the replacement therapy of orally administered proteoglycans.
