Abstract     Background and Purpose. The analysis of dental morphological traits is one of the most useful tools in determining biological relationships between populations (past and living). Data are also phylogenetically, ontogenentically and clinically important. The assessment of pathological changes of teeth and alveolar bone in past populations enables conclusions about their nutrition and way of living, and highlights etiopathogenesis, and natural history of diseases. The purpuse of this work was to find out morphological traits of the permanent teeth and pathological changes of the permanent teeth and alveolar bone in medieval inhabitants of Središče by the Drava River (10th - 15th century) and compare them with that of contemporary Slovenes. It is the first systematic analysis of archaeological material excavated in Slovenia. Material and Methods. We investigated 96 skeletons (23 male, 40 female, 33 of undetermined sex, age: 2-67 years) with 1641 permanent teeth. We determined the presence and expression of upper incisor shovelling and double-shovelling, upper first incisor lingual tubercles, upper incisor interruption grooves, upper molar Carabelli's trait, lower molar prostosylid and lower molar cusp number and groove pattern. Lingual tubercle, Carabelli's trait and lower molar groove pattern were for the first time investigated in contemporary Slovene population by scoring 313 dental casts of contemporary Slovene children and 200 extracted lower third molars. We recorded the grade of expression of dental traits according to standardized scoring methods and measured the depth of palatal and labial fossa. We assessed the presence and severity of caries visually with the aid of dental probe and apical periodontitis with inspection and radiographically. We measured alveolar bone loss by direct method of measurement the distance between the cementoenamel junction and alveolar crest. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
