Abstract     The Quality in health care in Slovenia project, which has been undertaken by the Medical Chamber of Slovenia, is aimed at ensuring unified databases for as many fields (specialities) of medicine as possible. Appropriate databases are the foundation for quality standards in health care. The project was launched in September 1999, while data collection on regular basis commenced in 2002. Since then, statistical summary of the data from the previous year is produced annually. In addition to that, final results of 2002 and 2003 were compared this year for all the participating departments together, as well as for each individual department. Pooled results were delivered to the co-ordinators of each field, while departmental results were delivered to department heads. Data collection and processing is provided by the dedicated information system (IS), which works over the World Wide Web (WWW) and has been developed to assure security, reliability and ease of use. To guarantee security and reliability, permanent maintenance and control over the IS have been implemented. The computerised data collection and data analysis tools are being regularly upgraded. Currently, we are developing software that would enable on-line analysis of the collected data for the most active fields. The results of such analyses will be available to the users (e.g., hospital wards or individual physicians) via WWW. So far, over 65,000 questionnaires have been collected. In this project, just as in the quality assurance field in general, we believe nobody does things so well that they cannot be improved, and there is nothing that cannot be made even better.
