Abstract     Every anniversary is an opportunity to look back into the past, to remember past events and past work, and then fo look forward with realistic eyes. Events connected with the beginnings and the development of thoracic surgery in Maribor are numerous, but there was also no lack of evidence of successful treatment of patients. In the post WW II years, the gradual reconstruction of hospital buildings containing only limited equipment was designed to give a new impetus and warrant the successful work of the small number of staff employed at the Maribor surgical services. Wellconsidered plans and well trained staff were the conditions for the introduction of modern operative procedures. Specialization of knowledge in all surgical fields made a gradual division of work necessary, resulting in the division of the previously uniform surgery into several professionally independent units. The year 1954 saw the foundation of the Division of Thoracic Surgery, with a small number of beds and just as small number of staff. In its very first year, at that time top-level operations were introduced, including those on the esophagus, stomach, lung, thyroid and the breast. Additional new operative possibilities were contemplated with the introduction of operations on the heart, which represented the beginning of heart surgery in Maribor. The increasing incidence of cancer also meant a yearly increase in the number of cancer patients. Operative programs were expanded and the number of in-patients increased. The need for additional staff arose as modified surgical methods of treatment were being adopted. In the treatment of pulmonary diseases, sleeve and wedge resections of the bronchi were introduced, for esophageal diseases high resections with approach through the left pleural cavity.
