Abstract     Background: Surgical open lung biopsy (OLB) is a medical examination mainly done when bronchoscopic lung biopsy (BLB) is not diagnostic. Our aim was to find out the subjective views of patients according to the problems they have and the time needed to come over. Methods: 44 people, by whom BLB in years 1999 - 2004 was not diagnostic and OLB was indicated, were intemiewed. 29 responses were obtained (11 M, 18 F, average age 58,6 years M, 52,8 years F). Results: 17 patients (58%) estimated the BLB as medium hard, 6 patients (21%) as a hard one, and 6 patients (21%) as an easy examination. 15 patients (51%) estimated the OLB as medium hard, 9 patients (32%) as a hard one, and 5 patients (17%) as an easy examination. 11 patients (38%) estimated BLB as an easier procedure than the OLB, 10 patients (34%) found it for the same rang of difficulty and 8 patients (28%) found it more diffcult. When both examinations were to choose 14 patients (49%) would decide for BLB, 12 patients (41%) for OLB and 3 (10%) patients for none of them. 16 patients (55%) needed 1 to 6 hours to get over after the BL8, 9 patients (32%) 24 hours, while after OLB recovery time needed was more than 24 hours (average 8,4 days), only 8 patients (28%) needed 6 to 24 hours. Conclusions: According to patients' subjective view OLB does not seem to be highly exhausting medical examination. It is important to know that more than 1/3 of patients between both examinations would decide upon OLB. But it is to consider that the time needed to come over is longer. Taking into account the results and expertly proved indication for OLB our hesitation to indicate OLB should not be an obstacle for the examination.
