Abstract     The impact on the aquatic environment through construction of the highways is one of the most affected and sensible due to the increased and polluted surface runoff. Performance efficiency in the highway runoff treatment od detention pond (DP) and vegetated biofilter (VB) on the highway section Arja vas-Celje was evaluated through one- year monitoring. The purpose was to establish the efficiency of both systems in highway runoff treatment and the size of water protection. VB is covering an area of 85 m2 and is planted with common reed (Phragmites australis). DP is covering an area of 73 m2 and is planted with cattail (Typha latifolia). The efficiency was monitored by means of evaluation of physical and chemical parameters of water samples at the ponds' inlet and outlet, and by measurements of chlorophyll concentrations and plant productivity. Influent concentrations for suspended solids, lead, chromium and nickel sometimes exceeded the maximum allowed values. Heavy rnetals such as zinc, iron, copper and cadmium were low or below limited at the inflow. Heavy metals reduction efficiency with the exception of chromium and copper, was more effective in VB. The research proved that VB and DB are suitable for highway runoff tretament. In contrast to DP, VB is more longterm efficient as it is able to effectively reduce concentrations of heavy metals. Besides in VB there is no flushing of sediment and downward transport of water. The results have proved that for planned highway constructions on drinking water sources and other sensitive aeras it is sensible to introduce VB. It is suggested to research the operating treatment of existent DP and to further improve the efficiency of DP with additional treatment systems in order to successfully decrease the impacts of the traffic on the environment.
