Abstract     Digestive gland epithelium of a terrestrial isopod Porcellio scaber was investigated. A morphometrical (epithelium thickness) and biochemical parameters (amount of proteins, lipids and glycogen) were analysed in animals from a culture and in animals starved for two and four days. The average epithelium thickness was determined using a computer program for image analysis. In control animals it is between 40 in 60 pm. In starved animals the average epithelium thickness was significantly lower. The amount of proteins and glycogen was also reduced in the hepatopancreas as well as in remainder tissue of the starved animals already after two days of food deprivation. Surprisingly, the amount of lipids in hepatopancreas and remainder of animals did not decrease significantly even after four days of starvation. Our results show that in P.scaber a short period without food (two days) affected the epithelium thickness and the amount of proteins and glycogen. No correlation between the epithelium thickness and biochemical parameters was observed.
