Abstract     Psychopathology of schizophrenia, its phenomenology, percentages of individual symptoms, and their complexes as well as their contents are being changed with time. These changes are in accordance with the social and political situation, leading ideas of the time, scientific and technical development. Beside that the diagnostic view and criteria for the disease are changing, too. Aims: The aim of this historical and retrospective study was to establish the changes of portions of individual symptoms and symptom-complexes of schizophrenia, especially in the perspective of their contents. Second aim was to notice the effect of changes in the diagnostics and conceptualisations of schizophrenia on the portions of symptom-complexes, and the effect of changes in treatment of schizophrenia. Methods: 120 records of first admissions patients with schizophrenia to the Psychiatric hospital of Ljubljana in the period 1880-2000 were chosen randomly: 10 records, 5 males, 5 females for every 10-year-period. Out of each record the data were used to fill in a form, specially created for this study. The studied psychopathological phenomena were counted and measured, and the differences in their percentages and means were analysed. Results: After World War II (1950-2000) the percentage of religious and magical delusions was diminished compared to the pre-war period (1881-1940). The percentages of sociopolitical and time-dependent delusions were not increased in times of the two World wars and Slovenian independence war. After spreading of radio (3rd decade of the 20th century) and television (6th decade of the 20th century) in Slovenia the percentages of delusions of control, influence or passivity and of delusions with technical contents were highly increased. In the second half of the studied period (1941-2000) the percentages of the delusions of reference and persecution were higher than in the first half (1881-1940).
