Abstract     There are several causes of thrombocytopenia in pregnancy. Some of them are related to side effects of pregnancy itself, other are caused by a pathological states of the pregnant women or the fetus. Most of pathologies involve either immune-mediated platelet destruction or platelet consumption. Since the clinical signs of different etiologies merge in many cases, the exact diagnosis is sometimes complicated. A proper expertise in clinical and laboratory principles is necessary for the correct diagnosis and therapeutical decisions. In this review, the most common forms of pregnancy related thrombocytopenias and appropriate laboratory diagnostic approaches are described.
