Abstract     Epigastric and umbilical hernias in adults are discussed. Most epigastric hernias are small, occuring more frequently in male, and are discovered as an incidental finding during surgical examinalion. They rarely incarcerate. Umbilical hernias in adults can be associated with inborn defects of umbilical ring or may occur due to raised intraabdominal pressure (paraumbilical hernias). They are ten times more common in women and incarcerate more frequently than epigastric hernias. Both kinds of hernias should be treated surgically.
