Abstract		Arthur Gilbert, M.D., surgeon from Miami in Florida, established, more than twenty years ago, the Hernia Institute of Florida where different types of abdominal hernias are operated. Gilbert's contribution to the operating technique of the tension-free inguinal herniaplastic is important, because he initiated a natural and consequently a simple surgical accession to the preperitoneal region, where he placed the mesh. Gilbert's method of the tension-free herniaplastic was accepted as the healing method in patients with inguinal hernias by the German Surgical Association (Deutsche Geselschaft fur Chirurgie) which by all means represents recognition for doctor Gilbert and his method of the tension-free herniaplastic. After this method patlents are being operated at more than 2000 surgical clinics all over the world.
