Abstract     The transfusion services supply hospitals with blood and perform all the necessary pre-transfusion tests for the patient. By using teleconsultation in the transfusion services, it is our intent to increase quality and assure the possibility of 24-hours of professional consultations with the aid of modern technology, particularly when there is no specialist in transfusion medicine present in the department for transfusion medicine. The transfusion service in Slovenia is supported by a suitable information technology, which can be upgraded to include the teleconsulting system, which enables standard quality of the transfusion service. The teleconsulting system has already been tested in a pilot study in which blood grouping results were interpreted correctly when an image of the coded gel card was transmitted to an improvised teleconsulting centre. The system enables remote teleconsultation and standard quality of the transfusion service in all blood transfusion sites of Slovenia. In this way telemedicine has found it place in quality assurance in the future unified Slovenian blood transfusion service.
