Abstract     Regular physical activity in early life, including all possible different types of body movement, represents one of the key elements of optimal physical, social and mental development. Active lifestyle has both direct and indirect health benefits for young people, especially by preventing excessive weight gain and obesity, assuring conditions appropriate for building stronger bones, healthy joints and effective heart functioning, maintaining appropriate mental health and by establishing firm cornerstones on healthy lifestyle in later, adult life. We all agree with the general recommendation for all children and adolescents to participate in any different type of moderate intensity physical activity for at least one hour daily. Such an advice includes the possibility of cumulation of different amounts, diverse types and intensities of exercise during the day - the concept of adding shorter periods of activity. To stop the gradual populational trend towards reduction of the amount of daily performed exercise (as it is the same in the majority of developed countries) and to stimulate active lifestyle with the purposes of health protection and improvement, we are also in Slovenia started to develop the national strategy on health enhancing physical activity (HEPA). Besides the scientifically supported contents and many concrete practical recommendations, this document will serve as a consensually agreed basis for assurance resources needed (knowledge, finances and humans) for its implementation.
