Abstract | The authors of this article describe the painting methods and techniques used by Master HGG in his work. The findings are the results of scientific examinations of the paintings of Master HGG. Twenty two paintings on wood and canvas, and parts of an altar that present the Slovene part of the opus attributed to Master HGG, were carefully examined using X-ray radiography (RTG), infra-red reflectography (IRR), ultraviolet photography (UVF) and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Samples of materials were also collected: canvas and paint layers. The samples were examined using optic microscopy (OM), ultraviolet fluorescence microscopy (UVFM), histochemical colouring, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). Research revealed the wealth and variety of master's painting techniques and materials. This is a refreshing change from other painters who in the Slovene Baroque and beyond approached work as they had been taught in the craftsman's routine. Master HGG, as research shows, engages in his work with more curiosity, changing it, trying things out and seeking to cover new ground. | |
