Abstract     During the Bilogy Students Research Camp Žirovnica 2003, the group for butterflies (Rhopalocera) has mainly investigated the central Karavanke mountains and adjacent northern part of Sava valley. Total of 38 localities have been visited and 72 species observed. The altitudinal distribution for all the species was checked and the results confirmed higher diversity at altutudes from 470 to 2000 meters. The discovery of humid grasslands with potentially large populaton of Maculinea alcon, Lycaena dispar and Carcharodus flocciferus near Preddvor, and discovery of easternmost populatin of Erebia epiphron at Mt. Mala Košuta are among the most interesting observations. This research is a valuble contribution to the ongoing project of the Atlas of the distribution of butterflies in Slovenia.
