Abstract     The quality in the nursing care has been systematically studied since the times of Florence Nightingale. She was collecting the data on mortality of soldiers in the Crimean War and by improving some processes which had to be performed systematically, the mortality was diminished from 32 to 2%. Despite stimulative beginnings, the progress in the nursing care was not developped in this direction for the next 100 years. Today the vision of the quality of nursing care is based upon the theory of nursing care as well as upon the process of nursing care. It is directed in achieving the best results for the patient and can be measured as well. At the Hospital Golnik - University Clinic of Respiratory and Allergic Diseases - we were the first in Slovenia to introduce systematically the system of quality in the nursing care. The activities of improving the quality have been carefully planned and applled since 1997. For this purpose different activities are performed: documentation, management of human resources, formation of nursing standards, assessment of the satisfaction of our patients and performing the professional control of nursing activities. The aim of the study is to find out the effectivness of the system of management of the quality from the point of view of patients' and nurses' satisfaction and the results of professional audits. In the first part of the study the theoretical starting points of the quality in the health care system together with the progress of quality in the nursing care are described. The model of improvement of quality FOCUS PDSA has been introduced. A special chapter is dedicated to the guidelines and standards being the most important element in the course of quality assurance. Further on the parameters of the process of improvement of quality are presented, i.e. team work, education, measurement and the model of quality, direction to the users.
