Abstract     Introduction: Due to its high incidence in the developed world as well as in Slovenia, breast cancer is a major health care and economic problem. Regular screening of asymptomatic women, aged between 50 and 69 years, may significantly reduce mortality because the disease could be detected in an earlier stage. Breast cancer screening in Slovenia is not organized in the same way as it is in other European countries. In our country screening is opportunistic; the women are visiting breast diseases centers upon recommendation of their family doctors or by personal initiative. These centers have neither any standardized guidelines that would assure the quality of their work nor any control over their work. Aim: So far, the breast diseases centers in Slovenia, which perform opportunistic screening for breast cancer by mammographic and clinical examinations, has not been under a systematic control. The aim of our study was to assess some performance indicators of breast screening carried out in the Breast Diseases Center at the Health Care Unit in Domžale and to find out whether it would be possible to achieve the recommended values of performance indicators, with the currently available technical facilities and personnel, comparable to European requirements for an organised screening.
