Abstract		Background. Family planning is fundamental and constitutional right in our country. It enables the couple to have a child when they are ready. In the period when they do not want to enlarge their family they can use one of the contraception methods, which can be suggested also by their family physician. The aim of the study was to examine thoroughly the extension of single methods of contraception, to find out acknowledgement and popularity of them and to find out whether general practitioners are ready to counsel on this sphere. Methods. We made survey research with questionnaires, in which 14 physicians, employed as general practitioners in Celje, distributed to men and women of age 30-40 years, which had attended their infirmary in the fixed period. Persons who were treated for sterility, who planned to have a child and pregnant women were excluded. We also sent questionnaires to the physicians employed in Public Health service Celje. Results. At the time of the study 84,8 % of participants used contraception. 15,2 % of participants did not use any contraception, these were often persons with lower degree of education. Women would trust at this matter mostly to the gynaecologist, but men would mostly ask for advice their physicians. In fact physicians, at that moment, advise about contraeeption only periodically. Conclusions. With regard to relatively higher number of couples who do not use any method of contraception, a more active approach of family physician would be required.
