Abstract     The discovery of the human genome in the year 2001 opened new possibilities for the diagnosis and treatment of systemic diseases, including those that affect the oral cavity. The review article deals with the prevalence of aggressive and chronic periodontitis in families and among monozygotic and dizygotic twins. The second part describes studies concerned with the principal genes and genetic polymorphism of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1 and TNF-alpha, and polymorphism of receptors on immunoglobulins G in patients with periodontitis. The results of these studies suggest that in approximately 50% of cases, the pathogenesis of periodontitis can be ascribed to genetic factors. Future research may lead to the development of genetic tests which could be useful for early recognition of patients susceptible to periodontitis.
Summary     Oris človeškega genoma v letu 2001 omogoča nove možnosti pri razpoznavi in zdravljenju sistemskih bolezni, vključno z boleznimi v ustni votlini Ijudi. V prispevku so opisane raziskave o pojavljanju agresivnega in kroničnega parodontitisa v družinah in pri eno- in dvojajčnih dvojčkih. Drugi del opisuje raziskave, ki proučujejo prisotnost genov in genetskega polimorfizma nekaterih provnetnlh citokinov, kot sta IL-1 in TNF-alfa, ter polimorfizma receptorjev na imunoglobulinih IgG pri pacientih s parodontitisom. Rezultati raziskav nakazujejo, da lahko razvoj parodontalne bolezni v približno 50% pripišemo genetskim dejavnikom. Nadaljnje raziskave bodo verjetno pripeljale do genetskih testov, ki bodo omogočili zgodnjo razpoznavo Ijudi, ki so nagnjeni k razvoju parodontitisa.
