Abstract     BACKGROUND. Depressive disorders are among the most widespread mental disorders in the developed world. Postpartum depression (PD) largely develops during the first six months following the delivery. When untreated, its duration may extend to two years. The world-wide prevalence of PD is between 3 and 33%, depending on the diagnostic methods and criteria. PD may have long-term consequences for the new mother as well as for the relationship between the couple and may affect the infant's development. It is treated with psychotherapy or antidepressant drugs. In more severe forms, hospitalisation is required. AIM. We have attempted to standardize the Edinburgh questionnaire in Slovenia and used it to acquire normative data on the domestic incidence of PD. We plan to add a short chapter on the psychological mindset of new mothers following the delivery to the existing supplement of Materinska knjižica, a booklet containing the complete information on the health of the mother and child during pregnancy and after delivery; the supplement includes useful information for new mothers. HYPOTHESIS. With regard to similar studies carried out in Israel (2000) and in Slovenia with BDI questionnaire (1987), we have anticipated the incidence of PD in Slovenia to reach approximately 20%. METHODS. The prospective research included new mothers whose babies were delivered at the maternity hospital, Porodnišnica Ljubljana, in the randomly selected weeks. In the first 72 hours following the delivery, we asked the new mothers to anonymously respond to the WHO questionnaire on well-being and to participate in the research. With the assistance of a psychiatrist and a translator, we translated the EPDS questionnaire. Six weeks after the delivery, each of the new mothers received the EPDS questionnaire with an addressed return envelope. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
