Abstract     Clinical picture of asthma is known more then 3500 years. Only recently important mechanisms crucial for understanding development of asthma were elucidated. In a short period of 40 years (1920 to 1960) several basic discoveries lead to the fundamental change in idea how asthma arises. In this moment the most important facts are already known to understand how acute asthma proceeds into the chronic form. Asthma is a good example of diseases in which new scientific facts changed conservative look at the problem. Interdisciplinary approach gives new possibilities for better understanding of the disease and for introduction of new therapeutic interventions. In the paper contribution of immunology for understanding of asthma is given in a chronologic way.
