Abstract     The article describes the substance labelling numeric systems. In greater detail are described E numbers which represent the European substance labelling system. This numbering system has been developed by the European Economic Community for additives in packaged food. The usage of E number is in Slovenia permitted also for excipients in medicinal products. The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) is used for cosmetics. The article also deals with the European and Slovenian legislation on food additives, the groups of food additives, some uses of food additives, the principles of food labelling, the sources of additives and the toxicity of additives. Cited are the most important web sites of European Union and European institutions, associations, commissions and organisations which develop food standards, establish guidelines and set requirements for additives, monitor the usage of additives and protect people's health.
