Abstract		Quality in health care in the European Union has recently been gaining importance for various reasons. Some states have a rather long tradition while the other, including Slovenia, are at the very beginning of the path towards quality. This article discusses recomnenda- tions and legislation at the European level (World health organization - Europe, Council of Europe, and European Union). It also brieffy describes the back ground for quality in health care in Slovenia, achievements and future perspective. Setting up of a national body for quality in health care and its role are emphasized.
