Abstract		The Society for Cytopathology at the Slovenian Medical Association (The Society) was founded in 1964. The aims of the Society are defined in its statute, which was updated in 1983 and again in 1998. It is stated that the aims are: to contribute to the professional education of its members, to help with the organization and suitable development of the cytological service throughout Slovenia as well as to aid with scientific research. During the last 40 years the members of The Society have been helping to prepare programmes and to organize various forms of scientific gatherings. Specialization in cytopathology, which is part of the specialization in pathology, was introduced at the initiative of The Society. Several lectures, courses, workshops and two European congresses of cytology were organized. Through the years of its activity, the Society has been striving to improve the organization of the cytological service. Together with the Society of Cancerology it was the initiator of the state programme for organized early detection of cervical cancer (ZORA). The Society prepared suggestions for standards in cytopathology, which serve for billing of medical services. Some members of The Society have also been active in scientific research, which is evident from numerous papers published in Slovenian and foreign literature. The aims for the future are: to continue with professional educcation of cytopathologists and screeners, to help in organizing a school for screeners to aid in organizing an appropriate service for cervical screening and to introduc quality control.
