Abstract     General practitioner (GP) nowadays more frequently encounters the need to manage patients with schizophrenia. Also the role of GP in managing these patients has changed. The GP can recognize the first prodromal signs of schizophrenia and refer the patient to specialist care. In patients with known diagnosis of schizophrenia the GP can recognize exacerbations, complications or co morbid disorders. An important role of GP are also appropriate interventions in case of psychiatric emergencies. Recent studies have demonstrated that up to one quarter of patients with schizophrenia are not in contact with specialist service and for these patients the GP is the only care provider.
