Abstract     Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of advanced atherosclerosis that has a favorable prognosis concerning viability of the limb in patients without diabetes or advanced kidney failure. However, PAD is a marker of increased mortality due to coronary events. Clinical suspicion of PAD is validated by Doppler measurements of ankle and brachial pressure and calculation of the ankle-brachial index. All patients with PAD require intensive preventive measures of atherothrombotic events. For patients with non-disabling claudication walking exercise rehabilitation is indicated. Patients with disabling claudication or chronic critical limb ischaemia require a morphological study of the arterial pathology followed by a revascularization procedure that may be endovascular or surgical. When gangrene of the limb is present, amputation is necessary, preferably followed by rehabilitation of the patient. In this paper the recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of PAD issued by the Society for Vascular Diseases of the Slovenian Medical Association are listed.
