Abstract     Acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage is a frequent emergency in general practice, emergency medicine and gastroenterology. The author presents the epidemiological data of patients who have been treated in a ten year period due to this condition. In 6416 patients (av.age. 59,3 years, SD+-17,2) emergency endoscopy was performed. peptic ulcer complications were the most significant source ob bleeding, in 36.4% of patients. Among frequent sources were also hemorrhagically-erosive changes of the upper gastrointestinal tract mucosa, in 16.6% of patients, reflux disease of esophagus, in 11.2% and ruptured esophageal/gastric varices, in 10.7%. Bleeding from the small intestine was confirmed in 0.4% and from the large bowel in 13.7% of patients. The total mortality of patients was 9.9%. Treatment of patients with acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage is demanding. Different factors influence the outcome of treatment, among the most important are age 65 years and concommitant diseases of patients.
