Abstract     The respiratory gases and some ventilatory parameters of lung function have been measured in 21 patients with COPD following bolus dose of aminophylline of 0.75 mg/1 kg body weight. The mean value of p02 has been unsignificantly increased after the application of aminophylline; pO2 was decreased in 12 patients and increased in 9 patients. The mean value of pCO2 was unsignificantly decreased. The mean value of SO2 was only slightly increased; in two cases the decrease of saturation after aminophylline was observed on the values being of clinical risk for the patient. All ventilatory parameters were improved after application of the drug, the best improvement was observed aiter 30 minutes. The reason for the decrease of pO2 in some patients - "responders" has been ascribed to the decrease of pulmonary hypoxic vasoconstriction due to the vasodilatory eiffect of aminophylline.
