Abstract     Numerous patients with gastrointestinal disorders have impaired absorption and/or increased catabolism of vitamin D and malabsorbtion of calcium. They may develop metabolic bone disease whose development is often asymptomatic. The prevention program must begin before irreversible cortical bone loss has occurred. Treatment with pharmaceutical agents should depend on the patient-specific characteristics. It is proven to increase bone density and decrease fracture rates.
