Abstract     Multiple myeloma or plasmacytoma is an uncurable malignant neoplasm affecting terminally differentiated B cells. Its clinical picture can be very heterogenous, involving monoclonal immunoglobulin overproduction and hematologic, skeletal and renal complications. Diagnosis includes hematologic and skeletal examinations. Treatment consists of chemotherapy, autologous bone marrow transplantation, antiangiogenic medication and recently proteasome inhibitors. Supportive treatment is also required. As new therapeutic agents affecting molecular mechanisms are under investigation, we need to understand the molecular pathogenesis of the disease. The prognosis depends on the rapid identification of the disease and on distinguishing it from other monoclonal diseases. Therefore investigation guidelines available in primary care are presented.
