Abstract     Graves' disease is a relatively common autoimmune thyroid gland disorder. Some pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease, the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are discussed in the paper. Side effects of antithyroid medication, radioiodine and surgery are presented in a group of 221 patients treated by the authors for Graves' disease in 2003. Radioiodine therapy is not associated with any serious side effect and is recommended where antithyroid medication is unsuccessful after one year. About 30% of patients with Graves' disease at our institution were treated with radioiodine. 70% of these were hypothyrotic and received hormonal replacement therapy. The rest were euthyreotic. Endocrine ophtalmopathy was present in 26% of patients and 10% of these were treated with corticosteroids.
