Abstract		Urinary tract infections are common cause of morbidity and can lead to significant mortality. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections presenting either cystitis or pyelonephritis are amongst the commonest of infectious diseases. Careful diagnosis and treatment result in successful resolution of infection in most instances. New antimicrobial agents have significantly reduced the need for hospitalization. Although the vast majority of patients respond promptly and are cured by therapy, patients with complicated infections need hospital and operative treatment.
