Abstract     The paper deals with all major abdominal surgical diseases treated by surgeons at surgical departments.The most common operative procedures are listed, and the associated complications and the course of hospital treatment are presented. The author stresses the importance of interaction between the operating surgeon and the family doctor in the process oftreating surgical patients. The author the points out that good knowledge of operative procedures done at surgical departments is extremely important, and highlights the role of the family doctor caring for the surgical patients after discharge. The decreasing trend in the length of hospital stay, and the increasingly important role played by the family doctor in the treatment of surgical patients are emphasized.
