Abstract     The contribution discusses two extensive special fields under collective title that fall into the domain of clinical speech therapy and concern communication and swallowing. Each of the two authors present the talk independently. In the first contribution, multidimensional, complex and dynamic process of communication is presented and handled from the view of a speech therapist that is at the same time a member of the multidisciplinary neurorehabilitation team for after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at the Teaching Hospital Maribor. The presented basic principles, methods and approaches lead to speech diagnosis and therapy in the acute stage of communication disorders. The goal of the process is to save the patient from isolation, which is the result of disturbed understanding and inability to express him/herself. This understanding is based on the theoretical grounds and years of first hand practical experience. This approach significantly contributes to the overall success of the early neurorehabilitation. In the second contribution, particularly a seemingly small account is dedicated to the swallowing ability as a basic function of phonology and articulation. Swallowing disturbances are a part of speech disorders and represent a threat to the patient life. Thus an exact and extensive evaluation of speech, the therapist serves in the team collaboration to the patient's benefit. The chaotic state of communication disorders and swallowing disturbance in the acute stage of TBI should be directed in a multi-modal way. This is a basic hypothesis of the speech therapist whose role is to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team where a wide range of professional knowledge, personal and adopted experience, contributes to the final result. This manner has been confirmed in the present contribution.
