Abstract     In the first few months after birth, the child's immune system is still under development and therefore functionally deficient. Child is protected from environmenial exposures by passive immunity, which he acquired during fetal life, and with the mechanisms of natural resistance. After the sixth postnatal month this protection seizes and the child's immune system is left to its own efficiency. At that time the immune system of the growing child is already able to produce an effective humoral and cellular immune response. Poor antibody responses in newborns following polysacharide antigen exposure is characterized with deficient production ot anti-A and anti-B isoantibodies of ABO blood group. Such a functional immunodeficiency is of advantage for successful heart transplantation as soon as possible after birth, suggested by some investigators.
