Abstract     Respiratory tract infections cause substantial morbidity and mortality in all age groups. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the principal cause of lower respiratory tract infection in small children. These infections exhibit a seasonal occurrence. In small children the clinical picture of acute bronchiolitis is most commonly observed. Reinfections do occur in older children and adults with a milder course. The treatment of acute bronchiolitis is symptomatic, hospitalized children often require supplemental oxygen. Since there is no effective antiviral treatment, prevention of RSV infections is required in high-risk children. RSV infection is prevented by hygiene and by administration of palivizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody that effectively prevents RSV morbidity in high risk children.
