Abstract     An infants disease reflects itself in the entire family. Sometimes, the hospitalisation of the child is inevitable. In coping with psychological difficulties that occur due to the hospitalisation of an infant, the important factors to be considered are childs age, the extent and nature of the desease, family relationships, upbringing methods, parental personal traits and the communication between parents and toward medical staff (doctors included). In some cases the so-called "hospitalism" occurs, and the description of its development phases is given. Different ways of communication between the doctor and the patients parents are possible, but our emphasis is put particularly on the advice how to communicate with a sick child without evoking too much additional fear.
