Abstract     Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are among the most frequent infectious diseases. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C related chronic hepatitis are the main cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma which are responsible for a high rate of morbidity and mortality Acute infection with HBV and HCV are rare in children but chronic infection is common in most cases of infected children. Mother to child or vertical transmission of HBV and HCV is now the dominant mode of acquisition of infection for children. Antenatal screening of pregnant women and passive and active immunization of newborns is a successful preventive measure against HBV infection. At that moment, no successful interventions to decrease the vertical transmission of HCV are known. Screening for hepatitis C infection in pregnant women is recommended only in women who have risk factors for hepatitis C infection. Some recommendations for the management of infants born to mothers with hepatitis C infection are known.
