Abstract     In the past few decades antibiotic overuse and misuse have been recognized worldwide. In appropriate use of antibiotics augments the cost of treatment and stimulates spread of resistant bacterial strains. The use of antibiotics in hospitals may be regulated by the lists of antibiotics that needed to be approved by an authorized person, most often by an infectious disease consultant. Antibiotic cycling is another method of regulated use of antibiotics in which an antibiotic regimen is chosen for a specified interval and than changed to another regimen for another specified interval. In some hospitals, antibiotics guidelines are implemented through computer assisted decision support systems. Studies on the effects of the above mentioned methods of antibiotic restrictions have shown a favourable influence of the restrictions to the cost of treatment and in most cases fo the antimicrobial resistance. In spite of the favourable results of the studies the problem of antibiotic overuse and bacterial resistance seems to be unsolved. More efforts by the infectious disease specialists and public are needed in the future.
