Abstract     Noninvasive methods are necessary for the evaluation of peripheral arterial diseases. They allow us to assess the degree of disturbance of the arterial circulation, and also help localise vessel lesions and assess their hemodynamic importance. The measurement of perfusion pressures and the determination of the ankle index remains the basic and the screening investigation method. Of all noninvasive methods, the localisation of vessel lesions and their exact assessment-grading of stenosis, delimitation of stenosis from occlusion and the determination of the extent of the vessel lesion - are possible only with colour duplex imaging of the peripheral arteries. This method is better than angiography because it offers us more data about the nature of the vessel lesion and especially hemodynamic data on arterial circulation. The sensitivity of this method id between 91 and 94% and its specificity between 98 and 100%. We recommend it both for disease in early and in more advanced stages, i.e., before planned recanalisation procedures. Colour duplex imaging is recommended for the assessment of success of recanalisation and for follow-up. In this way it is possible to prevent occlusions of the surgical bypass grafts and native arteries after angioplasty. Colour duplex scanning is also the main method in the diagnosis of arterial aneurysms, dialysis fistule and the diagnosis and treatment of pseudoaneurysms.
