Abstract     Ultrasound technique is one of the most important examinations in detecting atherosclerosis of the neck and intracranial vessels. The method is widely used in the diagnostic process of cerebrovascular diseases as well as during therapy and follow up of the patients. It is well known that high carotid stenosis is recognized as risk factor for ipsilateral stroke. The color-coded duplex ultrasound method is useful in order to determine the carotid stenosis. It enables us to observe the B-mode picture and Doppler effect simultaneously without delay. The frequency shift is coded with different colors. Power ultrasound method is suitable when low flow states occurr and for accurate image of the precerebral vessels. Several technical factors influence the flow image. The sensitivity of 90% and specify of 95% in detecting > 50% degree carotid stenosis is reported by experienced examinators. Flow imaging methods also enable early detection and follow up of carotid atherosclerotic disease. Ultrasound features of carotid plaques are well defined regarding to their echogenicity and surface characteristics. We can observe regression of carotid plaques as well as changes in their texture and surface. It is important that ultrasound examination is done by experienced examinatiors.
