Abstract     Contemporary ultrasound examination of the veins combines morphological imaging (B-mode) with colour Doppler flow mapping. Ultrasound examination is highly sensitive and specific in the diagnostic evaluation of venous thrombosis. Deep venous thrombosis of lower limbs is a common disease that may lead to fatal pulmonary embolism. Clinical diagnosis of venous thrombosis is unreliable and should be supplemented by objective testing. In the last decade venous ultrasonography has become the preferred testing method. The most reliable ultrasonographic criterion for the diagnosis of femoral and popliteal venous thrombosis is incomplete compressibility of the vein by the probe. Compression ultrasound is supplemented by visualization of the thrombus, examining the morphology of veins, and Doppler flow mapping. Criteria for the diagnosis of upper limb venous thrombosis are modified, but essentially similar to those used in the lower limbs. Due to the relatively high incidence of deep venous thrombosis, inaccuracy of clinical diagnosis and relative simplicity of ultrasound examination, we believe that ultrasound examination should become available in all hospitals in Slovenia.
