Abstract     The article discusses the role of the colour-Doppler test as an important diagnostic method when preparing patients for the operational treatment of varices. While in the prirnary stages of varices saphenofemoral insufficiency can be noted in 70 percent of the patients, cases with recurrent varices develop a wide variety of anatomic changes/conditions. The Edinburgh classification is suggested for the description of recurrent saphenofemoral insufficiency. In as many as 94 percent of the cases, recurrent varices are a consequence of neovascularisation process in the groin area. In the saphenopopliteal area, the anatornic circumstances observed are particularly diverse and therefore present the most probable cause for unsuccessful sugery in 22 percent of the procedures. The role of reflux in perforator veins is of increasing importance; for this reason, it is necessary to establish the veins' anatomic position and measure the subfascial diameter. The article determines the indications that require a colour-Doppler test and encloses the unified scheme to be employed when reporting on results of the test.
